Washington, D.C. – Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Congressman Mark Pocan (WI-02) and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) released the following statement on the unrest in Venezuela:

“We are deeply concerned by the situation in Venezuela. The solution to this crisis can only be found through sustained, regionally-led diplomacy, not armed conflict.

“We would like to remind the Trump Administration that Congress has never authorized military intervention in Venezuela – nor do we plan to. President Trump should heed the constitution and refrain from promoting regime change in another sovereign country.

“Additionally, it is clearer than ever that Congress must do its job to prevent this administration from engaging in illegal, ill-advised and open-ended wars. Congressional leadership should hold a vote on Congressman Cicilline’s legislation prohibiting any military action in Venezuela without explicit congressional authorization before this situation spirals even further out of control.”
