Washington, D.C.— The Congressional Progressive Caucus issued an official position today on S. 139, the “FISA Amendments Reauthorization Act of 2017.” The Caucus also endorsed the bipartisan Lofgren-Amash-Nadler amendment, which was later rejected by the House Rules Committee.

"The FISA Amendments Reauthorization Act of 2017 (S. 139) would reauthorize unconstitutional government surveillance activities without making meaningful reforms to Section 702. Under this provision, the government can collect the communications of millions of Americans’ without a warrant, a practice that disproportionally affects activists, immigrants, religious minorities, and communities of color. We oppose passage of the FISA Amendments Reauthorization Act of 2017 without the inclusion of reforms, such as those found in the Amash-Lofgren USA RIGHTS Amendment. These reforms are essential to reinstating the constitutionally protected civil liberties of all Americans.”
