Washington, D.C.- Today, Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) issued the following statement after the release of President Trump’s extremist immigration policy demands to save Dreamers and protect other immigrants.

“Once again, President Trump and his nativist staff are proposing legislative solutions that are an attack on immigrants and American values. Since assuming the presidency, Trump has declared open season on this nation’s immigration policy. Whether attacking the refugee program, enacting a racist travel ban, or unleashing ICE agents to terrorize immigrant communities, Trump has demonstrated a willingness—if not an outright desire—to destroy our immigrant heritage.

“Donald Trump and his Republican allies created this crisis. It was Trump who heartlessly ended the DACA program and imperiled Dreamers. It is congressional Republicans who have repeatedly obstructed bipartisan solutions in favor of draconian enforcement bills like the Goodlatte/McSally bill in the House and the Cotton/Purdue bill in the Senate. Trump, his anti-immigrant staff, and complicit congressional Republicans have taken the Dreamers hostage, and now expect us to pay a shameful ransom.

“I will continue to fight the Trump administration’s white nationalist agenda and work towards a solution that protects Dreamers without compromising America’s values.”
