Washington, D.C. — Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Greg Casar (TX-35) issued the following statement after Congressman Jerry Nadler announced he would not seek another term:

“Congressman Nadler has been a fierce advocate for a fairer and more just America over decades of public service. We will always admire Mr. Nadler’s energy, wit, and curiosity as one of the most active members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, where he has always been willing to engage in robust policy discussions and ask penetrating questions at our weekly lunches.

“As a champion of civil liberties and defender of the Constitution, he led the charge against the Patriot Act’s warrantless surveillance of Americans and has advanced reforms to protect our privacy rights. Congressman Nadler has valiantly fought against the scourge of antisemitism wherever it occurs while upholding constitutional free speech rights for all. And under Mr. Nadler’s chairmanship, the House Judiciary Committee led a groundbreaking bipartisan investigation that exposed the monopoly power of Big Tech firms.

“An advocate for peace, Mr. Nadler stood against the immoral and illegal Iraq War in 2002, warning the American public of the threat of regime change and violation of international law. He also played a critical role as a supporter of President Obama’s nuclear diplomacy with Iran in 2015, contributing to the success of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which limited Iran’s nuclear capabilities and avoided war.

“Congressman Nadler’s remarkable career reflects his record as a progressive hero on too many issues to count, from supporting workers rights–including leading the passage of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act—to LGBTQ rights, where he spearheaded the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act. He has been a strong proponent of Medicare for All and cannabis justice, and he secured essential healthcare support for 9-11 first responders. The Progressive Caucus thanks Rep. Nadler for his tireless contributions and service.”
