Washington, D.C. -Today, Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) and Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) released the following statements in response to President Trump’s proposed budget for FY 2019:
“President Trump once again proves he’s looking out for the interests of the wealthy while remaining fixated on imposing a twisted philosophy that will decimate the middle class. Slashing Medicare, Medicaid, nutrition, and anti-poverty programs while increasing defense spending is absurd. With this new budget, Trump is living in a fantasy world,” said Rep. Grijalva. “While he requests non-military funding that will be $57 billion less than the budget deal that just passed, Trump is also leaving taxpayers to foot the bill for his divisive border wall that Mexico would ‘supposedly’ pay for. Trump needs to wake up. The American people will not stand for a con man that says one thing and does the opposite. This budget is an assault on working Americans and jeopardizes the long-term sustainability of our country.”
“The Trump Administration’s budget is an attack on the very Americans President Trump promised to serve and it undermines the values we share as a nation. Rather than support an economy that strengthens the middle class, the promise of a safe and secure retirement, and the idea that every American should have access to lifesaving care, the Trump budget attacks programs that everyday Americans rely upon,” said Rep. Pocan. “We should make critical investments in health, education, and workforce development for the American people, not gut resources that allow millions of hardworking Americans to get ahead.
“From dangerous cuts to Medicare and Social Security, to slashing funding for education, housing, and workforce training and protection programs, the Trump budget will have serious consequences for American families,” continued Rep. Pocan. “And while Republicans will hide behind the same old talking points of fiscal responsibility and hard choices, it is clear that President Trump and Republicans are engaging in a coordinated effort to further enrich the wealthy at the expense of the middle class. For months, President Trump advocated for massive tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations, and today’s budget further reflects that he is not working in the interests of the middle class, workers, students, seniors, and the poor.”
