Washington, D.C. – Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Congressman Mark Pocan (WI-02) and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on today’s impeachment vote:

“As elected members of Congress, each of us is granted a precious responsibility: The trust of the American public. Over the past year, after an exhaustive investigation by the House, it is clear that President Donald Trump violated that trust and threatened the integrity of our elections.

“By coercing a foreign ally into investigating his political rival – and withholding vitally needed aid – President Trump has abused his power. And when he was caught, President Trump proceeded to obstruct Congress, directing an unprecedented campaign of stonewalling.

“The President admitted to wrongdoing on national television, and despite his efforts to stonewall the House, multiple patriots came forward with corroborating evidence. Congress had no choice but to act. President Donald Trump is an urgent threat to our democracy.

“Earlier this year, the Progressive Caucus became the first caucus to endorse the impeachment process. We did not take this decision lightly. We did so recognizing the serious nature of the crimes committed by the President of the United States and understanding impeachment to be the only appropriate constitutional remedy for his grave violations of our national security and attacks on the integrity of our elections.

“Today’s impeachment vote rests on a bedrock principle of our Constitution: No one, not even the President of the United States, is above the law.

“The impeachment process will now move to the Senate. We urge our colleagues to honor the oath they swore to the Constitution of the United States and find the courage to put our country first, above party or politics.”
