WASHINGTON — Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) Chair Greg Casar (TX-35) released the following statement after news that U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, Alina Habba, has charged CPC Member Rep. LaMonica McIver (N.J.-10) for carrying out lawful oversight of a newly reopened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in New Jersey:

“The baseless charges against Congresswoman McIver for simply doing her job should send a chill down the spine of every American. If the president can arrest law-abiding elected officials in an attempt to silence them, then no American is safe from his abuses of power.

“Our Members were exercising their Constitutional duty to oversee federal operations, as clearly authorized by federal law.

“The members of the Progressive Caucus will stand firmly with Rep. McIver, and we will pursue every legal and congressional avenue to defend the right of elected representatives to uphold the law—even when Donald Trump won’t.”
