Washington, D.C.Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Rep. Mark Pocan (WI-02) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) released the following statement after President Trump unveiled his FY2020 Budget:

“President Trump’s FY2020 Budget is a recipe for more suffering, more hunger, and more homelessness.

“It makes massive, painful cuts to Medicare and Medicaid – endangering health care for seniors, the disabled, and the most vulnerable. It guts the basic programs that everyday families rely on – like food assistance, education initiatives, and affordable housing. It wastes billions on an unnecessary and divisive wall, and increases funding for the Pentagon’s Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) slush fund by 138 percent.

“This budget sells out the American people. It’s a mean-spirited, morally bankrupt proposal written to benefit military contractors, polluters, and health insurance executives at the expense of the poor.

“In the face of the unprecedented, and growing, income inequality, we should be building up the working class – not chipping away at the programs that make it possible. Instead of cutting Medicare and Medicaid, we should expand health care to all who need it. Instead of taking food out of the mouths of the hungry, we should ensure that everyone can afford nutritious meals. And instead of asking families to foot the bill for tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations, we should make the wealthiest in this nation pay their fair share.

“The Trump Budget would be a disaster for the American people. We can – and must – do better for hardworking families, which is why the Progressive Caucus will be introducing a bold, forward-looking budget that expands Medicare and social security, invests in safety net programs, and addresses the challenge of climate change.”
