H.R. 1012, the Six Triple Eight Congressional Gold Medal Act, would provide a Congressional Gold Medal Act to recognize the women of the 6888 Central Postal Directory Battalion (the “Six Triple Eight”), the only African-American Women’s Army Corps unit to serve overseas during World War II. During WWII, approximately 6,520 African American women served in the Army, 855 served with the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, and deployed to Europe. These women came from throughout the United States and many had to enlist in recruiting stations in the north due to Jim Crow segregation laws. These women were set up to fail, but they stood up and delivered and exceeded all expectations.
