Congressional Progressive Caucus Opposes GOP Legislation to Militarize Major U.S. Cities and Infringe On D.C’s Home Rule
WASHINGTON — Following a survey of its members, the Congressional Progressive Caucus announced its official position to oppose any Republican legislation that infringes on Washington, D.C.’s home rule, changes D.C. laws or personnel without its elected council’s consent or facilitates Trump’s deployment of federal troops to U.S. cities without prior authorization.
House Oversight Republicans have prepared a slate of over a dozen bills attacking Washington, D.C.’s democratic decision making, several of which are expected to be voted on by the House of Representatives this week. They range from eliminating and replacing the elected and accountable Attorney General for the District of Columbia with the President's hand-picked and unaccountable associate, requiring no confirmation by the U.S. Senate and no local ties, to a full repeal of multiple local D.C. laws that have been in place for many years that are tested and proven to improve public safety and criminal justice in the District. These measures are part of a Republican playbook to empower Trump’s authoritarian tendencies, weaponizing national emergencies and the U.S. military to target multiracial and Democratic-led cities and states.
