WASHINGTON — Following a survey of its members, the Congressional Progressive Caucus announced its official position to oppose H.R. 3486, which would authorize life imprisonment for non-violent offenses, increase mandatory minimum sentences, and provide the Trump Administration yet another legal tool to criminalize and incarcerate immigrants.
H.R. 3486 would revise the existing criminal penalties for improper entry and improper reentry by increasing maximum penalties. Among other provisions, the bill allows a life sentence for an individual who improperly enters the country and is subsequently convicted of any offense punishable by more than 1 year of imprisonment, including nonviolent offenses.
