Washington, D.C. – The Co-Chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Congressman Mark Pocan (W1-02) and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), released the following statement on the 3rd anniversary of the Trump Administration’s Muslim Ban, urging swift congressional action to overturn this offensive and harmful ban:

“It has been three years since Donald Trump’s bigoted Muslim Ban went into effect. Three long years that families have been separated; loved ones have been forced to miss milestone celebrations, funerals, and weddings; students have been prevented from attending universities; patients have been blocked from obtaining lifesaving treatments in the United States; and Muslim Americans have felt attacked and insulted. By implementing this hateful policy, the Trump Administration has deliberately torn families apart and betrayed our founding promise as a nation that welcomes immigrants.

“We have recently learned of the Trump Administration’s plans to double down on this shameful policy, expanding it to an additional seven countries. This is an appalling escalation which serves no purpose other than to sow fear, Islamophobia and xenophobia.

“Congress must do everything in our power to stop this gross injustice – starting with passing Congresswoman Judy Chu’s No Ban Act, which has been endorsed by the Progressive Caucus. This critical legislation, with 214 House cosponsors, would not only end the Muslim Ban, asylum ban, and refugee ban, it would also prohibit future discrimination against immigrants on the basis of religion. Congress should move quickly to pass this legislation and send a clear message that we will stand up to the hateful and discriminatory policies coming out of the White House.”
