Washington, D.C.- Today, Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) and Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) released a statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court holding oral arguments in the case of Janus v. AFSCME Council 31:
“Unions are an essential part of the American workplace, and for generations, they have played a critical role in securing a better future for America’s workers. Unions allow workers to unite as one voice to fight for safe working conditions and better wages and benefits, all of which are critical to building a vibrant middle class,” said Rep. Grijalva. “Now, their good work is under attack. Bankrolled by radical right-wing billionaires, the Janus case would deal a devastating blow to union membership and make it increasingly difficult for workers to organize.
“America’s workers deserve a strong, organized voice when it comes to their wages, benefits, and working conditions. They don’t need billionaires making it harder for them to advocate for their own physical and economic security,” Rep. Grijalva continued. “The future of the American worker is at stake, and I remain committed to ensuring all workers are free to organize for better working conditions and fighting exploitation in the workplace.”
“During oral arguments at the Supreme Court, special interests and conservative mega-donors continued their well-established, coordinated attacks on unions and American workers. Despite pledging to support workers during his campaign, President Trump has joined with dark money conservative groups to attack American workers and overturn the law,” said Rep. Pocan. “Public sector unions have helped lead America’s labor movement, fighting for stronger wages and health care, while standing up for workers’ rights and a secure retirement. We should strengthen, not weaken public sector unions and the Supreme Court must affirm their role as the foundation of a strong middle class and the ladder to economic opportunity.”
