WASHINGTON, D.C.– Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ) and Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) released the following statement today after the Trump administration implemented guidelines for their Muslim ban last night, which excludes grandparents, grandchildren, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and brothers-and sisters-in-law and other travelers from six Muslim-majority countries with close familial relationships to U.S. citizens from entering the country.

“Plain and simple—President Trump’s cruel Muslim ban, which went into effect last night, defies the Supreme Court’s directive to protect ‘bona fide’ family members. Many Muslims now face the humiliation of navigating a series of arbitrary rules that devalue family relationships. We stand in solidarity with the massive outpourings of support at airports and in courtrooms for our Muslim brothers and sisters, and all who seek safety and refuge in the United States.”

“There’s no question the imposition of this ban and its nonsensical restrictions will rip families apart and do nothing to make our country safer. The American people will not sit idly for months in the face of this injustice as the Supreme Court considers a final ruling on its legality. Congress must vote to rescind the ban and must exert substantive oversight over the Administration's troubling implementation. We urge our colleagues to seriously consider Congress’ power of the purse as a means to rein in Trump’s discriminatory overreach.”
