Washington, D.C.– The Congressional Progressive Caucus voted to endorse H.Con.Res 81, a bipartisan resolution led by Vice Chair Ro Khanna and co-sponsored by 30 CPC Members, which directs the president to remove unauthorized U.S. military forces participating in the catastrophic Saudi Arabia-led war in Yemen that has provoked the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. The bill notes that the U.S.-Saudi hostilities in Yemen’s civil war is counterproductive to U.S. efforts to disrupt Al Qaeda and the Islamic State in Yemen.
The CPC's endorsement of H.Con.Res 81 further amplifies a surge of grassroots mobilization for the measure across the country, reflected by a statement of support by 65 grassroots organizations representing millions of Americans across the political spectrum. Both endorsements follow on the heels of a recent letter applauding the co-sponsors of H.Con.Res 81 by leading national-security voices, constitutional law authorities, Middle East experts including a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, and several former Members of Congress.
The CPC strongly urges Members of Congress—Democrats and Republicans alike—to co-sponsor H.Con.Res 81 to reassert Congress's constitutional authority to end unauthorized wars and bring to a swift end the senseless suffering of Yemeni victims of the U.S.-Saudi military campaign, millions of whom are on the brink of starvation. For nearly three years, the U.S. has sold Saudi Arabia missiles and warplanes used in Yemen, and U.S. military personnel have been regularly assisting the Saudi coalition in selecting targets for airstrikes and providing midair refueling for fighter jets conducting aerial bombings, in violation of the War Powers Resolution of 1973. In addition, Saudi Arabia is enforcing a blockade on the famine-threatened country, obstructing imports of food and medicine from entering Yemen.
