WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) Co-Chairs Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) issued the following statement after Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) joined the CPC for their first post-election meeting.

“We were excited to welcome new Members of our Caucus and Senator Warren – one of the strongest progressive voices in our country – to our weekly meeting yesterday. Together, we discussed the central role progressives will play in Democratic politics following last week’s election.

“Donald Trump’s campaign was built on insulting and scapegoating immigrants, women, and ethnic and religious minorities. Now more than ever Democrats must stand up to hate in our society. We stand with those who feel threatened by the violence and intolerance this campaign has created.

“If President-elect Trump runs his administration like he ran his campaign, progressives will be the first ones to hold him accountable.

“Progressives are committed to making sure Americans know that Democrats stand on the side of working Americans. Working people who feel crushed by decades of wage stagnation and the rising costs of health care, housing, and education will know that progressives have bold solutions that will address the real economic anxiety they feel.

“The overwhelmingly popular agenda that our Members fight for every day – debt-free college, access to affordable childcare, a $15 minimum wage, relief from sky-high prescription drug prices, and expanding Social Security benefits – are the changes that will make a difference in the lives of Americans. These are the policies that Democrats should proudly champion moving forward.”

The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) is the largest caucus within the House Democratic Caucus, with over 70 members standing up for progressive ideals in Washington and throughout the country. Since 1991, the CPC has advocated for progressive policies that prioritize working Americans over corporate interests, fight economic and social inequality, and promote civil liberties. The CPC champions progressive policy solutions like comprehensive immigration reform, a $15 national minimum wage, fair trade, gun violence reform, debt-free college, and making the federal government a Model Employer.
