Washington, D.C. – Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) Co-Chairs Reps. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed a Continuing Resolution to fund the government through December 15th:

“Less than twenty-four hours after voting to cut food assistance for 3.8 million Americans, Republicans passed a bill that makes it harder for working families to find work and get affordable health care. We do not think shutting down the government and denying millions of Americans badly needed coverage is the best thing for our country.

“The bill to fund the government passed by Republicans today will eliminate as many as 1.6 million jobs and threaten our economic recovery. Five years after the Great Recession, Americans are starting to get back on their feet. This bill will knock them right back down.

“We need a responsible budget that invests in America’s working families. We need to endthe across-the-board budget cuts that are kicking kids off of Head Start so we can continue our corporate tax subsidies. We need to invest in groundbreaking medical research that may one day produce treatments for cancer, Parkinson’s and other terrible diseases. We should invest in students, not cut student aid.

“We reject this short-sighted, partisan spending bill and demand a budget which puts Americans back to work today.”
