Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) Co-Chairs Reps. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) today released the following statement after Senate Republicans filibustered yesterday’s vote to approve the Buffett Rule:

“We applaud Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Democrats for holding a vote on the Buffett Rule, which requires millionaires and billionaires to pay the same tax rates as middle class families and working people.Senate Republicans should explain their votes to filibuster this extremely popular measure, especially considering the majority of Americans currently pay higher tax rates than super-wealthy investors who earn significant income from Wall Street. According to a just-released CNN/ORC International poll, nearly three-fourths of Americans support the Buffett Rule and believe it should be law.

“That’s why we introduced the Budget for All last month, which includes the Buffett Rule and new tax brackets for millionaires and billionaires. We return to the fairer system that treats income earned by the wealthy just like income earned by the middle class. A hard day’s work shouldn’t be taxed more than money made on Wall Street.

“The Buffett Rule reflects the American values of hard work and fairness to build an economy that works for all Americans – the rich as well as the rest of us.”
